Green Tea - General facts

What is Green Tea? Most of the people mistake Green tea as another ordinary tea in Green color. First of all Green Tea is produced from the same plant of other teas, camellia sinensis. Normally the first 3 leaf buds are plucked from the plant for making ordinary teas, called black tea, which is common in homes and hotels. But Green Tea is made up of the same tendered first 3 leaf buds and not processed at all. Where as for other teas, the leaf buds are processed and fermented.

Fresh first 3 leaf buds contain more anti-oxidants, which enhances health. But the fermentation process for black tea ensures a good smell and taste but destroys most of the anti-oxidants and therefore cannot give health benefits. They have only caffeine due to oxidation process, which is a stimulant and can refresh people after taking a cup of tea. But it is not good for health and also make people get addicted to it and it is the worst story.

For Green Tea, the leaves are simply dried and not oxidized or fermented or put to any process and therefore, Green Tea retains all anti-oxidants and hence good for health. Green tea may not be that tasty in general and also may not have any pleasant flavor. Therefore it needs to be formulated well to taste good and give a pleasant flavor. Raw Green tea products are not customer friendly and therefore only it is not popular in India yet. In fact, Green Tea has got a number of health benefits but due to improper manufacturing, people do not accept the products available in the market.

Also raw Green Tea leaves have got some drawbacks and therefore only could not gain popularity. First its shelf life is only 3 months. In India, Green Tea is managed by traders and they are keen to sell all their quantity without bothering about its shelf life. Also people do not know the real facts about Green Tea and do not have systems to check shelf life of the product they buy. Using this to their advantage, traders pluck more than top 3 leaf buds of tea plant and try to sell everything as Green tea, as Green tea fetches more price than ordinary tea. Because of this reason only, in India Green Tea is yet to be popular.

In other words, concept of Green Tea is good but the products available in the market are not proper Green Tea. Even if the products are genuine Green Tea, still they have drawbacks. Apart from shelf life problem, they are presented in tea bags. People cannot see what is inside the bag and also the infusion decides the quality of Green Tea drink. More the infusion time, more is the caffeine content. Also volume and heat principle make only limited anti-oxidants to get dissolved and there by the total Green Tea content is not fully used.

Anti-oxidants in Green Tea all in the form of polyphones and interpreted as EGCG. In natural Green Tea leaves, polyphones percentage is very less and therefore one has to take more number of cups of Green tea drink in a day, say 10 and more. For foreigners and people in cold region can consume so many cups of drink. But others, particularly in India, people have the habit of taking only 2 or 3 cups of coffee/tea in a day. Also polyphones percentage varies from 5% to 15% depending on the altitude of the tea plantation and the season.

For all these reasons only, Green Tea extract with 30% polyphenols is good and a well formulated Green Tea product with Green Tea extract can ensure quality and health benefits. The major drawback in natural Green Tea leaves is that human liver can absorb hardly 5% of anti-oxidants in Green Tea. In other words whatever Green Tea drink one drinks, it will simply go through the intestines without giving any health benefit.

Most of the products available in the market want to capitalize the name “Green Tea” but fail to ensure the absorption by liver. Unless a vitamin C or E medium is integrated, human liver cannot absorb the health benefits fully. Further, heavy metals are found in natural Green Tea leaves, which is not good for health. Therefore only a formulated Green Tea with Green Tea extract is recommended by health experts.
